MoCCA Fest Recap

How was my MoCCA? It was GREAT!

 

I started out at the Drink & Draw Like a Lady event at 192 Books, hosted by Raina Telgemeier. It was GIRLS ONLY!  I feel lucky to go to events like this, where you see so much female comic talent in one room, because they make you forget that women creators are such a minority in comics as a whole. (Women such as Jennifer Hayden, with me below.)

Page by Paige debuted last year at MoCCA, but this year was my first time behind my very own table. I had a bunch of new awesome folks and sent lots of books and ART to good new homes. (including my editor Maggie Lehrman) Thank you, everyone who came by my table, I felt so very loved!

I was also super excited about having stuff to trade with other exhibitors, like Shannon Wheeler and Casey Girard...

 The afterparty (featuring a performance by Daniel Johnston and launch of the Harvey Pekar's Cleveland) was utterly PACKED.  So many fun nerds in one room! I had fun getting into trouble with the Brooklyn and Trip City kids.

"Will & Whit" Samples

I'm please to announce I'm now working full throttle on my second YA graphic novel with Abrams Books...Will & Whit! I finally just signed the contract so it's official! My goal is to be done by Christmas, and it's slated for release in May 2013.

The look of Will & Whit...

As I'm editing my script and developing thumbnails, I thought I'd start playing with the look. I want it to have a different look than Page by Paige, since my new character's subconscious is expressed through her shadows rather than her illustrations. I know I want the panels to be rounded, to bring in some dry-brush texture, and use fewer ink washes than Page by Paige. So here are a few variations I'm tinkering with! Process pics...
 

Sample 1

Border: Black outside the border, with dry brush edge.

Linework: All dry brush-pen. Thin outlined fox shadows.

Shading: Darker digital shading.

Sample 2

Border: White outside the border.
Linework: All clean brush-pen lines.
Shading: Digital shading using some drybrush texture. (subtle)

Sample 3

Border: Black outside the border.
Brushwork: Combo of clean brush-pen & dry brush-pen lines. 
Shading: Lighter/less digital shading. Darker wolves shadow.

Comics Quick Draw! @ Brooklyn Book Festival

Here's the recap from the Comics Quick Draw event
at the Brooklyn Book Festival this weekend!

I drew live on stage with the lovely comic creators Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy) and Raina Telgemeier (Smile). We were featured in the Publishers Weekly blog about Comics and Graphic Novels at the Brooklyn Book Festival, as well as a Publishers Weekly article Children’s Books at the 2011 Brooklyn Book Festival: A Photo-Essay. We had a GREAT crowd who gave us bizarre and entertaining suggestions for things to draw.
We had just 3 minutes to draw each picture, and it went by fast! We had time to do 7 rounds...

We talked about the drawings after each round, and at the end we gave all the drawings away to the kids. Then we signed books!
Let's see, here's my giant powered donut being bombarded with sprinkles...
And here's is my version of an elastic man (I thought he should be playing basketball)...

Finally, here's a collaborative one we all did of a dragon and a hippo on a catwalk. (I drew the dragon, Dave the hippo, Raina the crowd)

This weekend! Brooklyn Book Festival

THIS WEEKEND I will be at the Brooklyn Book Festival!

I'll be taking part in a DRAW-OFF with the amazing (and super-nice) Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman, hosted by Calvin Reid from Publisher's Weekly Comics World. Since I've been working on Christmas windows so much lately rather than comics, I'm feeling a bit rusty with my drawing! So it'll definitely be interesting.

It's Sunday September 18th at 11:00am. It is FREE and will be at Brooklyn Borough Hall: 209 Joralemon Street. (Subways: ACF Jay Street, R Court Street, 2345 Borough Hall)

Mirror Portraits @ BookCourt

This Sunday I held a signing and workshop at BookCourt here in Brooklyn! I talked about my artwork and invited folks to make mirror self portraits, which was an activity based on my introspective style of art-making portrayed in Page by Paige.


People drew what/who they saw when they looked in the mirror using china markers...


And here is a sampling of the finished ones! People drew themselves as a pirate, an artist, a princess, a baby, etc.




How about me? Well, I drew myself under construction...
